Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young teenager. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian that became part of her repertoire in 1996.
