O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She appeared as a model in commercials for a time before relocating into Los Angeles. The first role she had was modeling in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She first appeared on the big screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was later cast in an actress in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She has also guest starred as a guest on independent films and TV shows. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC cop drama NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the team from 1993 until the year 1996. The actress was nominated in the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actor in a drama for every year. The ensemble and O'Grady were awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series Ensemble in the year 1995.
